Japanese Woodblock Reprint
Kasuga Gongen genki e (Legends of Kasuga Shrine)

Comments - Terrific 9-panel woodblock print from 1924 recreating a section of the famous "Kasuga Gongen genki e" scroll painting. The original artwork consists of a set of 20 hand scrolls painted on silk by Takashina Takakane in 1309 illustrating the history and miracles of the Kasuga Gongen shrine in Nara. It was commissioned by a member of the Fujiwara Clan to honor the deities of the Kasuga Shrine and Kofukuji Temple, and in gratitude for the clan's current and future prosperity. The scroll is currently part of Japan's Imperial Collection and is considered a national treasure for its beautiful depictions of the customs of the time. This 9-panel scene features a curious scene of men and women sleeping in a palace at left, while at right workmen and carpenters are busily constructing the shrine, carving pillars and planing beams while other men set posts into a grid outlined with string. Beautifully colored with exquisite detail and fine bokashi shading. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a woodblock image of this famous and historic work.
