Satsuma Rebellion

Comments - Dramatic scene from the Satsuma Rebellion of rebel samurai under attack by Japanese Imperial forces at Kagoshima. The leader of the rebels, Saigo Takamori watches from astride a black horse at left, wearing a black uniform and plumed cap. Below him, a samurai decapitates a soldier with a stroke of his sword, sending the head tumbling across the ground. In the center, a samurai falls backwards as a soldier raises his sword high above his head, gripping it with both hands. A Japanese warship can be seen in the harbor at right, with a small boat filled with troops making its way across the choppy waves. The white banner at left features a slogan that was fabricated for the rebels by woodblock print artists, "A New Government, Rich in Virtue." The slogan was never actually used by Saigo, whose red and white flags shown featured the crest of the Shimazu Clan of Satsuma, as seen flying above the fortress at center. A striking image filled with action and detailed with vibrant color and burnishing in the black uniforms.
