Noh Performance at the Imperial Palace, 1878

Comments - Terrific triptych of the Meiji Emperor and Empress watching a Noh theater performance at the Imperial Palace. A performer dances onstage, hopping on one foot and waving a fan, as musicians accompany her with hand drums. The beauties kneel on the rich floral patterned Western style carpeting, while the emperor and a dignitary sit in red velvet chairs trimmed with fringe in the center. The empress sits on a chair at left, surrounded by ladies-in-waiting, with other members of the audience beyond. A handsomely detailed image with vibrant jewel-tone colors.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 28 1/4"

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Light soiling throughout. A few small holes repaired. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
