The Subscription List, 1849

Comments - Terrific illustration from the popular kabuki play "The Subscription List" (Kanjincho), the story of Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his faithful retainer Musashibo Benkei, the warrior-monk, leading his men across the border disguised as monks. The aristocrat Togashi Saemon, shown here in at right in formal court dress, is charged with intercepting the party. However, Togashi is suspicious of the young porter, who resembles Yoshitsune (and actually is). To prove otherwise, Benkei angrily beats his lord and master. Here, Benkei glares angrily at the daimyo, grasping a string of prayer beads in one hand and his folding fan in the other. Yoshitsune stands quietly at left with his hat in hand, wearing a blue robe over his kimono and pants. Togashi's henchmen gather behind him at right, dressed in distinctive spider web print kimono. A handsome design with expressive figures, nicely detailed with embossing in Benkei's white pants and soft shading in the clouds.
