From an untitled series of actor portraits on the backs of shamisens

Nakamura Shikan IV as Sambaso in Mata Kuru Haru Suzuna no Tanemaki, 1868 - Terrific kabuki portrait of Nakamura Shikan IV as a sambaso dancer in the play "Mata Kuru Haru Suzuna no Tanemaki," with the portrait appearing on the back of a shamisen. He wears a tall court cap with a striped red and yellow sun on the side, and a striking blue kamishimo patterned with a crane stretching its wings. He grins happily as he looks up over his shoulder. The title cartouche across the top takes the form of an open book with the cover curled back. A bold, dramatic design with lively color, also in the collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 9 1/2" x 14"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. A few small holes repaired from reverse. Thinning in subject as shown. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
