Ichimura Uzaemon as a Firefighter, 1860

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Ichimura Uzaemon in the role of a firefighter, taking a break in the action to drink a cup of water. One sleeve of his quilted jacket is pushed off his shoulder, revealing an upper body tattoo with cherry blossoms and petals. He stares ahead with a worried expression, drying the side of his neck with a dotted towel. A red paper lantern rests on the ground beside him. In the background above a cloud-like border, firemen's standards called matoi are seen in silhouette alongside a ladder. A terrific design with wonderful detail and fine bokashi shading.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 5/8" x 9 1/2"

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Two vertical folds, now flattened. A few small holes, repaired, blends well. Slight soiling. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
