Prisoner Escaping, 1856

Comments - Handsome scene from the kabuki play "Yume Musubu Cho ni Torioi" of a prisoner escaping from a net-covered palanquin while being transported. From left, the actors are Onoe Kikugoro IV as Kumasaka Ocho and Bando Kamezo as Hikimado Chogoro. The escapee Chogoro stands on the neck of one of the palanquin bearers as he fastens a dotted towel about his neck, ready to take flight. He grimaces angrily, his brows furrowed, while a beauty at left peers out from beneath the brown kimono draped over her head. A pine trees frames a view of the night sky overhead above the foliage alongside the road. Great expressive figures with a nicely detailed setting.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 19 1/8" x 13 3/4" + margins as shown

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Two separate panels. Partially backed with old paper. A few small holes repaired from reverse. Some wrinkling and a couple creases in subject. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
