The Willow Tree at the Gate of the Shimabara Pleasure Quarter

Series; Famous Views of Kyoto

The Willow Tree at the Gate of the Shimabara Pleasure Quarter - Terrific view of the Shimabara Pleasure Quarter in Kyoto at night. At left, a drunken customer is escorted home by a waitress and a servant as another waitress watches with amusement, giggling into her hand. At right, a high-ranking courtesan and her young kamuro or child apprentices strolls in the opposite direction. Patrons can be seen on the upper-story verandah of a teahouse at left, and a crescent moon glows between drifting clouds overhead. Wonderful detail in this interesting subject. A fine old reprint, published in 1935 by Shinbisha of Osaka, with publisher's seal at lower right.

Image Size - 8 1/2" x 13 3/4" + margins
