Taira no Kiyomori Beckoning the Sun to Remain Still

Series; Mirror of Famous Generals of Japan

Mirror of Famous Generals of Japan - Yoshitoshi designed this fantastic series of fifty-one prints of military heroes from 1876 to 1882. These dramatic images of famous warriors created a sensation with the Japanese public. Full of violence and intense emotions, Yoshitoshi's bold and innovative compositions tackled a historic subject using a modern style. His realism and drafting skill captured the important legacy of these national heroes at a time when Japan was struggling with the aftermath of the Satsuma Rebellion. Classic Yoshitoshi images, these dynamic prints are a great choice for collectors.

Taira no Kiyomori Beckoning the Sun to Remain Still - Great image of the ruthless general Taira no Kiyomori standing on the roof of the partially completed Miyagawaji Temple, gesturing to the sun with a fan. He decided that the temple he was having built should be completed before the day's end; when that appeared unlikely, he ordered the sun to stand still until the building project was finished. The sun has already begun rise on a new day, a rosy glow spreading across the horizon, as two beauties kneel at his side. A terrific scene from this classic samurai tale. Fine embossed detail on Kiyomori's white sleeves, soft shading in the sky.
