Lady Ejima and the Actor Ikushima Shingoro

Series; A New Selection of Eastern Brocade Pictures

Lady Ejima and the Actor Ikushima Shingoro - Dramatic scene based on the true story of a tragic love affair between the Lady Ejima and the popular kabuki actor Ikushima Shingoro, which took place in 1714. Their love was forbidden because they were from different classes. They are shown here on the verandah of a teahouse, Ejima wiping away tears as she looks back over her shoulder at the actor. She wears a gray and white kimono with a red tie-dyed sash, her sleeves and obi fluttering in the evening breeze. A great image from this true story known as the "Ejima-Ikushima Incident," which shut down the theater where the pair used to meet for romantic trysts and banished the lovers from Edo. Beautifully detailed with allover cloth embossing in Ejima's robe and touches of burnishing. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art has this image in its collection.
