Yukimura Hiding Himself in the Reed Bushes from the Shogun Ieyasu's Deputy, 1884

Comments - Fantastic scene of the warrior Saneda Yukimura hiding as a procession with the Shogun Ieyasu's deputy approaches a river crossing. He hunches behind a clump of reeds under a tall tree at the water's edge, grasping the stalks to push them aside. He rests his gun atop his thigh, his sword hanging at his side, his loose hair tied back with a white sash. The deputy rides horseback at left, carrying a tasseled command baton, surrounded by his retainers on foot. A red glow spreads along the horizon as the sun sets, the sky darkening as evening falls. A terrific image with a beautifully detailed figure and great natural setting. A striking design, beautifully drawn and detailed, with touches of burnishing and fine bokashi shading in the sky.

Artist - Gekko (1859 - 1920)

Image Size - 14" x 28" + margins as shown

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Three panels, not attached at the seams. Horizontal center fold in each panel, now flattened. A few small holes, repaired, blends well. Faint toning, slight creasing. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
