New Year's Outing before a Suspension Bridge, 1877

Comments - Fantastic scene of a nobleman and his party enjoying a New Year's Day outing on the grounds of the Imperial Palace. Several woman pull young pine trees, a symbol of longevity, an activity thought to bring good luck in the New Year. Another beauty sits with a brush in hand, a poem slip set out for writing greetings to friends. A modern suspension bridge dominates the background, a rather incongruous note in an otherwise traditional ukiyo-e subject. The artist Kyosai designed the bridge while Kunichika created the rest of the image. An interesting and unusual mix of tradition and progress, as the bridge had just recently been completed when this print was made. This image appears on page 12 of Amy Reigle Newland's recent book, "Time Present and Time Past: Images of a Forgotten Master." A fascinating triptych.
