A Japanese Dealer’s Personal Collection - This print and the others posted with our “Japanese dealer” subtitle are from the personal collection of a leading Japanese dealer. We were fortunate to be able to select a small number of fine pieces from the collection of this prominent Japanese print dealer. The prints in this offering are particularly good, rare and desirable designs that this dealer had set aside for his personal collection. We chose prints that we knew would appeal to Fuji Arts clients. Take some time to explore this fine, small group. These designs are rarely offered!

Comments - Incredible design of the ghosts of Taira no Tomomori and his fallen warriors rising up out of the sea to sink Minamoto no Yoshitsune's ship as he crosses the sea at Daimotsu Bay. The ghastly spirits appear on the crest of a wave at left, generating a violent storm with enormous waves to swamp the boat. Yoshitsune's men hurry to pull in the sail, grimacing angrily, one warrior clinging to the mast above the sail. Bolts of lightening flash across the sky, and straw coats and a hat go flying in the strong gusts of wind. An incredible scene from this famous tale, rendered with amazing detail and a striking composition. The British Museum has this image in its collection. This is an extremely rare Kuniyoshi triptych of this subject, and the dealer we acquired it from said that it is the only one he has seen in forty years of business. A terrific choice for a collector interested in the samurai tradition.
