Comments - Great triptych illustrating Act 1 from the "Kanadehon Chushingura," the kabuki play based on the famous tale of the 47 ronin. Lady Kaoyo has arrived at the Imperial Palace to identify the battle helmet of a fallen samurai. She kneels at left as two retainers show her a helmet from among those in a wooden box nearby. Lord Moronao frowns down at her from upper right, wearing a voluminous black robe and tall court cap. Her husband, Lord Hangan sits below, his blue robe patterned with his crossed hawk feather crest. Lord Wakasanosuke watches from upper left with a sober expression, while the shogun eyes him from the center. A handsome design with colorful, expressive figures and a nicely detailed setting.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 29 1/2" + margins as shown

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Three panels, not attached at the seams. Vertical fold near left edge of center panel. A few wormholes and small holes, most repaired, blends well. Slight soiling. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
