Poetry Contest, 1894 - Lovely image of upper-class women taking part in a poetry composing contest. Two of the beauties sit at low writing tables, with a brush and poem slip in hand. Others watch them with eager smiles, waiting to hear the verses they have written. In the center, a woman stands near the edge of the verandah as another beauty approaches. The room opens out onto a handsome view of a garden with a lake, with blossoming plum trees framing the view and a line of birds flying through the sky. Nice color and detail in the elegant interior and furnishings and the handsome kimono and obi, including embossing on the white kimono trim. A charming subject.

Artist - Gyosui (1868 - 1935)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 27 7/8"

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Three panels, not attached at the seams. Paper remnants on reverse from previous backing. Slight toning, soiling, and offsetting. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
