Sagaminokami Hojo Takatoki Fighting Tengu - Terrific image of Sagaminokami Hojo Takatoki battling tengu, winged, long-nosed demons. Hojo Takatoki served as the last Regent for the Kamakura Shogunate during the troubles leading up to the Nanboku-cho Wars. Although he became a monk, he lived a life of excess and debauchery before committing suicide when Ashikaga forces attacked him and his family at Kamakura. Here, laughing tengu swoop at the regent, taunting him as he ineffectually waves his fan at them. His head is shaved, and he wears a tan kimono patterned with wisteria tucked into purple hakama pants. The tengu are wonderfully detailed with grizzled faces and flowing hair, pointed nails and two-tone feathered wings. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art has this image in its collection. A terrific design.
