Series; Eighteen Honorable Men and Deeds
Nanatsumen (Seven Masks) - Interesting scene based on a tale about a Noh mask maker, who performs a dance with each of seven masks. Here, he dances for a nobleman, soberly waving a fan as he strikes a pose looking over his shoulder. The nobleman sits regally on a red mat at right, calmly resting his hands atop his fan. Two women watch from the right, their hairstyles detailed with fine line work and burnishing. Striped gray and white tent walls provide privacy for the group, the cloth strung between a maple tree and a pole. An intriguing subject with delicate cloth embossing in the white stripes of the tent walls and silver mica in the fan, which has oxidized to a darker tone. The border is lightly embossed as well.
