Policeman Making an Arrest, 1857

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a policeman arresting the young man Yokichi outside the Matsubaya house. The guard grabs him from behind, holding an iron truncheon to his neck as Yokichi frowns up at the beauty Matsubaya Matsuyama. She grins back at him with a fond expression, holding a curtain in one hand. At right, Matsubaya Bunzo takes hold of the end of her red obi, scowling and throwing his arm wide in alarm. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Yosobei's son Yokichi, unidentified actor as police officer, Onoe Kikugoro V as Matsubaya Matsuyama, and Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Matsubaya Bunzo. A pine tree frames the night sky behind the group, and the black fence in the foreground is topped with sharpened bamboo poles. Nice expressive figures with soft shading in the background. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
