The Great Battle of the Night Attack at Horikawa, 1860

Comments - Fantastic triptych of samurai attacking Horikawa Castle, where Minamoto no Yoshitsune found refuge from his brother Yoritomo, who eventually killed him in his quest to become absolute ruler of Japan. Here Yoshitsune and his retainers fight off their attackers from a verandah at left. Yoshitsune fires an arrow into an opponent's neck as a fellow warrior leaps over the railing, gripping his sword. At right, the loyal Benkei swings a large iron club from another verandah. The fighting is fierce with swords and spears clashing and bodies flying through the air among clouds of smoke. A dramatic image conveying the chaos of the battle, with excellent detail in the armor and weapons. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. A terrific subject from the life of the notable Yoshitsune.
