Ushiwakamaru Serenading Joruri, 1842 - 1845

Comments - Attractive scene of the young Ushiwakamaru (the future Yoshitsune) serenading Princess Joruri outside her mansion. He stands beside the garden gate, playing a flute, as a servant stands inside the courtyard, holding a lantern aloft. The youthful Ushiwakamaru wears a print brocade robe over a red kimono, a black court cap, and tall geta sandals. The garden is filled with flowers and grasses, with vines cascading over the fence. A few geese are seen in silhouette against the night sky as they descend for the evening. A charming subject, beautifully colored and detailed.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 9 5/8" x 14" + margin as shown

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Some rubbing, soiling and toning at edges. Partially backed with old paper. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
