Series; Seven Flourishing Plants on Lanterns for Summer Evenings

Arashi Kichisaburo III as Sonozaki Senkichi, 1852 - Terrific portrait of Arashi Kichisaburo III as Sonozaki Senkichi in the kabuki play "Sumidagawa Tsui no Kagamon." He stares over his shoulder with a wide-eyed, worried frown, his brows raised in concern. He wears a floral print kimono over a delicately embossed red under robe with a black collar, his thinning hair pulled back into a slender top knot. The portrait appears in a circular inset on the side of a boldly checked black and white paper lantern with a poem slip tied to the bottom. A fantastic design with an interesting format and vibrant color. Includes fine shading in the background and additional embossing in the ribs of the lantern. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.
