Wrestling with a Giant Carp, 1849

Comments - Fantastic kabuki scene of three men wrestling with an enormous carp amidst swelling waves and splashing foam. At right, Yokichi of the Kanda River and Mizusao of Take grapple with the twisting body of the fish as it leaps from the water, Yokichi gripping his sword as he prepares to stab the creature. At left, Hachi san Toroku grasps the thrashing tail with both arms. Spectacular kabuki scenes involving catching a giant carp are known as "koi tsukami." A terrific image with incredible detail in the intricate scales of the fish. A stunning composition with the fish almost springing to life off the page.
