Loyal Maid and Evil Samurai, 1839

Comments - Great scene from the play "Sekai ha Yoshida Sato no inazuma," one of the many kabuki dramas about the evil samurai Fuwa Banzaemon, who steals a valuable scroll in the care of the warrior Nagoya Sanza. Here, Sanza's loyal maid Okuni Gozen drapes a kimono over a lamp to shield the light, looking over her shoulder with an intent expression, a roll of tissues in her mouth. Banzaemon kneels on the floor nearby, recoiling as if frightened or repulsed by the servant. His trademark black kimono patterned with red lightening bolts and storm clouds lies on the floor behind him, next to an elegant tobacco set and a bed beside a screen patterned with birds flying above the ocean. From left, the actors are Iwai Shijaku and Nakamura Utaemon. Nice expressive figures with attractive detail and color in the clothing and furnishings.
