Curios of All Themes at the Yushima Seido Exposition, 1872

Comments - Fantastic image of an exposition held in Japan at the Taisenden Hall of Yushima Seido, a former Confucian temple. The display opened to the public on March 10, 1872, and 150,000 people attended during the thirty days that it was open. This incredible scene shows a gallery filled with natural history specimens and art objects. Shelves at right hold stuffed birds and animals, including a peacock and a porcupine, along with skeletons and shells. In the center, the walls are covered with paintings and prints, and smaller shelves hold gold coins and jewelry. A golden shachi (mythical fish) figurine is mounted on a wheeled platform, while a basin of water in front of it contains a salamander. At left, beautiful examples of kimono, armor, musical instruments, and masks are artfully arranged. A great historic image with marvelous detail and color.
