Meeting at a Shrine, 1859

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a beauty encountering a monkey trainer at a shrine in the play "Utsubo Zaru." The trainer dances about, hopping on one foot as the monkey peers around his back. The woman looks back at him wide-eyed, with a rather sheepish expression. She holds an arrow in one hand and a bow in the other, wearing a black vest over a red kimono patterned with flowers, pine branches, and writing. At left, a yakko or low-ranking servant watches unhappily holding a wicker case for a biwa or lute over his shoulder. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Kuzo, Nakamura Fukusuke as Saruhiki, and Ichikawa Danzo. The pillars of a torii gate are framed by a blossoming plum tree against the night sky. Nicely detailed with expressive figures and fine bokashi shading in the background.
