The Great Conference on the Conquest of Korea, 1882

Comments - Handsome triptych depicting the Shogun Toyotomi Hideyoshi in conference with his generals and high-ranking samurai, discussing the issue of sending troops to invade Korea. The shogun sits on a platform in the center with female attendants beside him, with the warriors gathered around the room below. Kato Kiyomasa is shown at left in a black robe, looking solemnly at the shogun. His long bushy beard trails over his chest, partially concealing his expression. Tokugawa Ieyasu sits at lower right in a blue garment patterned with the three hollyhock crest of the Tokugawa Clan. The fellow in purple behind him gestures with his fan, looking rather angry. The center of the floor is set with offering trays and a long-handled sake server. An intriguing image with expressive figures and a nicely detailed setting. Include burnishing in the black robes and court caps, and the platform base.
