Struggle under a Full Moon

Comments - Fantastic kabuki scene of a struggle taking place on a grassy plain as an enormous full moon rises in the night sky. In the center, a wild-haired rogue holds a flaming torch high as he grabs the ends of the sashes held by the man and woman flanking him. He wears a furry vest over a brocade robe and a suit of armor trimmed with fringe. The beauty at left, kneels on the ground cowered behind her sleeve, while the nobleman at right turns his head away with his sleeve raises. Bats flutter across the sky above the tall grasses. From left, the actors are Iwai Shijaku I, Ichikawa Ebizo V, and Sawamura Tossho. A terrific image with bold graphic appeal.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 30 1/2" x 14"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Three separate panels. Some creasing and wrinkling at edges as shown. Some light rubbing and soiling in subject. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
