Ichikawa Danjuro as a Fireman

Comments - Terrific kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro as a young fireman. He wears a quilted fireman's jacket depicting a carp and splashing water, the stitching intricately detailed. He looks up with a frown, his hair pulled into a knot at the side of his head and a dotted cloth twisted around his forehead. The portrait is set against a dark night sky with the silhouettes of firefighters below carrying axes and red paper lanterns, with a fringed company or brigade standard called a matoi at upper left. An inset in the form of an open book includes text. A striking image, nicely detailed and colored.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 9 1/2" x 14" + margins as shown

Condition - With excellent color and detail. A few small holes repaired from reverse. Some light toning at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
