Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Tateba no Taheiji, 1862

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Tateba no Taheiji in the play "Ehon Gappo-ga-Tsuji," a tale of revenge at the Gappo Crossroads. The evil Taiheiji is plotting with his former master, Daigakunosuke, a samurai attempting to overthrow the Taga Clan. He is shown here in side a shop, grimacing angrily with a sword behind his back. One side of his plaid kimono is draped over his arm, and he has a blue and white dotted towel draped around his neck. A fire roars from a brazier filled with pine branches at lower left, the red flames flickering, and the wall is cracked with plaster missing. An interesting image of this famous villain.

Artist - Yoshiiku (1833 - 1904)

Image Size - 9 1/2" x 13 5/8"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Backed with old paper. A vertical crease at center. Some rubbing and soiling at edges. Minor staining at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
