Boatman by Kunisada II (1823 - 1880)

Original Kunisada II (1823 - 1880) Japanese Woodblock Print
Boatman

Comments - Dramatic kabuki image of a boatman gripping his oar, with the curved arms of an anchor framing the scene at upper right. The boatman stares to the side with an unhappy frown, wearing a blue shirt with a distinctive tie-dyed pattern over a black under garment, his red kimono pushed down to the waist. Several ships with red lanterns can be seen in the distance, with pine branches hanging over the water at left. An interesting subject, handsomely colored.

Artist - Kunisada II (1823 - 1880)

Image Size - 9 1/2" x 13 5/8"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Backed with old paper. A vertical crease at center. Some rubbing and soiling at edges. A couple small holes repaired from reverse. Minor staining at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
