Picture Book of Comic Poems: Mountains upon Mountains (Ehon kyoka yama mata yama), 1804

Picture Book of Comic Poems: Mountains upon Mountains - Terrific design from Hokusai's three volume series "Ehon kyoka yama mata yama," which features kyoka or comic verses along with views of Edo from the yamanote area. The use of mountains in the title is a satiric reference to this only slightly hilly district in northeast Edo. These delightful depictions of daily life range from picnicking and visiting temples and shrines, to seasonal outings and laborers at work. The slender and elegant beauties are drawn with graceful flowing line work, and the settings are wonderfully detailed and enhanced with color. A charming look at activities in and around the capital city during the Edo era.

Artist - Hokusai (1760 - 1849)

Image Size - 8" x 11 3/4"
