Series; Flowers of Tokyo and Famous Places

Flowers of Tokyo and Famous Places - Handsome design from a series by Kunichika featuring large kabuki portraits paired with small scenes of famous places in Tokyo by Hiroshige III. The portraits are set against a red tie-dyed cloth pattern, providing a bold graphic element. The title cartouche includes a lantern and fringed fireman's standard called a matoi, with the series title referring to fires being so common that they were called "flowers." These lively and interesting scenes are a fun choice for a kabuki enthusiast.

Nakamura Shikan as the Robber Kidomaru, 1875 - Fantastic scene of Nakamura Shikan as the robber Kidomaru lying in wait for the great warrior Minamoto no Yorimitsu, also known as Raiko. He has concealed himself beneath the skin of an ox, drawing his sword as his victim comes into view. He frowns angrily as he stares over his shoulder, his hair somewhat disheveled with loose wisps framing his face. The red and white background behind him imitates a popular tie-dyed fabric pattern. The landscape inset above shows a boat making its way through the pilings of a bridge, the roadway above busy with traffic. A lively, colorful design with fine detail in the hair and burnishing in the ox skin.
