Gripping a Sword

Series; Flowers of Tokyo and Famous Places

Flowers of Tokyo and Famous Places - Handsome design from a series by Kunichika featuring large kabuki portraits paired with small scenes of famous places in Tokyo by Hiroshige III. The portraits are set against a red tie-dyed cloth pattern, providing a bold graphic element. The title cartouche includes a lantern and fringed fireman's standard called a matoi, with the series title referring to fires being so common that they were called "flowers." These lively and interesting scenes are a fun choice for a kabuki enthusiast.

Gripping a Sword - Interesting kabuki portrait of a man gripping a sword in one hand as he looks to the side, the sleeve of his kimono caught between his teeth. In landscape above shows a street scene with a large torii gate at right. Nicely detailed with fine line work in the hair.
