The Changban Bridge Scene from The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, 1852

Comments - Fantastic triptych illustrating a scene from the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms," a historical novel written about the three warring kingdoms in third century China. Mounted on a black horse, Chohei defends Changban Bridge (Chohan Bridge in Japanese), using his glaive and his fierce bellow to send attackers sprawling. Two men fly over the side of the bridge at right while others tumble backwards to the foot of the bridge. A terrific composition with wonderful energy and fantastic detail in the expressive figures, exotic costumes, horse equipment, and weapons. A great subject for a collector interested in this historic tale. A stunning design. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 28 3/4" x 14 1/4"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Three separate panels. A few small holes repaired from reverse. Some light rubbing and soiling at edges. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
