Series; The Faithful Samurai (Seichu gishi den)

The Tale of the Forty-Seven Ronin - Based on historic events, the fantastic tale of the Forty-Seven Ronin remains the most famous Japanese samurai story of all time. It has inspired countless plays and prints based on the bravery and honor of the forty-seven warriors who avenged their master's death. Kuniyoshi's most famous series, "The Faithful Samurai" (Seichu gishi den), is an absolute masterwork and considered the ultimate forty-seven ronin series among collectors and scholars alike. Few other printmakers ever matched Kuniyoshi's detail and artistry, and his ability to capture the passion and intensity of these famous warriors.

These terrific designs come from a 1917 edition published by Yoshikawa Kobunkan. Each features a portrait of one of the ronin during the night attack, finely detailed and colored, along with the accompanying text page recording the actions of the individual shown. These fine old reprints are a fantastic opportunity to collect a timeless Kuniyoshi image of these great heroes.

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Two panels, not attached at the seams. Stitching holes along inner edges from previous folio binding. Some prints have slight soiling or creasing, a few have some spotting. Please see photos for a sense of individual condition. Generally in good condition overall.
