Distraught Fathers, 1858

Comments - Interesting triptych depicting the "Sannin Warai" scene from the kabuki play "Date Moyo Somete Kisaragi," a tragic tale about two young lovers who are mistakenly suspected of treason and ordered to be beheaded. Here, the fathers of the couple present cylindrical containers supposedly holding the severed heads of their children to the beauty's mother. The men look up at the woman with anxious, worried expressions. She looks over her shoulder with a slightly malevolent smile, refusing to acknowledge them. Later, the containers are opened to reveal only notes indicating that both fathers have committed suicide to spare their children. The background is covered with lovely floral motifs, including irises, peonies, cherry blossoms, and chrysanthemums, and the black kimono features a subtle burnished geometric pattern. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Danzo VI as Saisaki Iga-no-Kami, Ichikawa Dannosuke V as Ume-no-Kata, and Kataoka Nizaemon VIII as Sonobe Hyoe. A terrific print with wonderful detail and color, and expressive faces.
