Warrior Battle Attackers, 1875

Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene of Onoe Kikugoro as the samurai Todorokisaka Goro battling several attackers. He grips a bloody sword above his head as he grabs hold of a bundle of sharpened bamboo poles thrust at him as spears. At left, another enemy points a blade directly at his face as he stares ahead intently. He wears a patterned white shirt tucked into striped hakama pants, a blue sash tied around his chest with his empty scabbard hanging at his back. At right, an explosion radiates star-like against a rocky cliff, sending rays of red light across the night sky. An inset at upper left shows an angry man grimacing unhappily. The two actors in the left panel are Otani Monzo as Tazuno Kado Futoshi and Ichikawa Sadanji as Okamino Kuzo (inset). A dynamic composition with large colorful figures. Includes fine cloth embossing in the white shirt and headband, and soft shading in the background.
