Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Japanese Soldier with Russian Enemy, 1904

Comments - Intriguing illustration from the Russo-Japanese War of a Japanese soldier aiding a wounded Russian enemy. He kneels with one hand on the shoulder of the fallen man, whose head and upper arm are wrapped in bandages. The Japanese officer calmly faces a Russian infantryman aiming a gun at him from just over the edge of hill at left, where clouds of smoke billow into the sky from the continuing battle. Beautifully composed and detailed with soft shading in the ground and clouds, cloth embossing in the text inset at upper right, and burnishing in the black scabbard.

Artist - Meiji era artist (not read)

Image Size - 28 1/4" x 14 1/4" + margins as shown

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Three separate panels. Some light toning in subject. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
