Beauty and Jealous Man, 1851

Comments - Intriguing image from the kabuki play "Godairiki Koi no Fujime" of Onoe Baiko V as the beauty Oya Koman and Ichikawa Ebizo V as the Sasano Sangobei, who is jealous of Koman's relationship with the samurai Satsuma Gengobei. Sangobei has tricked Koman into writing a letter pretending to sever her relationship with Gengobei. Here, the frightened beauty holds the message in her outstretched hand, the long paper trailing down onto her knee. Sangobei emerges from a large wooden chest behind her, a menacing scowl on his face. Nice expressive figures with soft bokashi shading in the background.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 9 3/4" x 14 1/2"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Backed with old paper. Some rubbing and soiling at edges. A few small losses repaired from reverse. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
