The Soga Brothers Confronting Suketsune, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the famous tale of the Soga Brothers, whose father was murdered by the nobleman Suketsune when they were young boys. Here, the brothers confront Suketsune at a New Year's party, where they reveal their true identities and their intention to avenge their father's death. At left, the impetuous younger brother Goro has leaped to his feet, ready to do battle at that moment. He wears a black kamishimo with his trademark pattern of butterflies over a red under robe, his feet firmly spread and arms thrust out before him. Kneeling in the center, Juro urges him to remain calm, holding out his hand in a restraining motion. Suketsune grimaces in alarm, holding his sword in his outstretched hand. He wears an elegant matching coat and kimono patterned with a hawk and a lobster among splashing yellow waves. From left, the actors are Ichimura Uzaemon, Bando Shuka, and Nakamura Utaemon. A great image from this popular story of honor and revenge.
