Series; Yoshitoshi's Courageous Warriors

Shinchunagon Taira no Tomomori Sweeping the Deck - Interesting portrait of general Shinchunagon Taira no Tomomori calmly sweeping the deck of his ship during the Battle of Dan-no-ura. A court lady has collapsed at his side after having been told of the impending defeat of the Taira Clan in this famous naval battle, her long hair flowing over her voluminous robes as she crumples into a heap. Rather than face capture, Tomomori committed suicide by tying himself to an anchor and leaping overboard. An unusual depiction of this warrior's final moments, with a beautiful setting and touches of embossing and burnishing.

Artist - Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892)

Image Size - 12 7/8" x 8 3/4" + margins as shown

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Backed with paper. Small tear at right edge, repaired, blends well. Toning, slight soiling, a few creases, paper curls up slightly at sides. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
