Comments - Fantastic triptych illustrating a famous episode during the Second Battle of Uji River in 1184. Under the direction of Yoshitsune, Minamoto warriors race across the river on horseback to see who can reach the enemy first. The deep water is up to the necks of the horses as they ford the rushing river under a hail of arrows, the water rippling around them. A samurai on a dappled horse mounts the bank first, rushing headlong into enemy troops. Another warrior on a black horse reaches the shore at bottom left, grabbing hold of an enemy's spear as it is thrust at him. The shore is lined with tangled tree branches and ropes to impede the progress of the attackers. Other warriors rush across a wooden bridge to engage the enemy, fighting with swords and spears, one man falling to the water below. A great view of this historic battle, with lively detail and handsome color.
