Yoshitsune and Benkei Escaping to the North, 1843 - 1847

Comments - Handsome illustration from the famous kabuki play "The Subscription List." Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his men disguised themselves as monks to sneak cross the border to escape the wrath of his brother Yoritomo. They are shown here encountering a group of young boys out working in the fields, carrying rakes and with baskets on their backs. Here the loyal Benkei gestures angrily with his fan, trying to deflect the curious children, his disguised master Yoshitsune and the other men sitting behind him. His portable shrine, woven hat, and walking stick are piled on the ground before him. Under the pine tree in the center, a man blows on a conch shell. A great image with a beautiful setting, the deep blue lake behind them framed by pine trees. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. A classic kabuki subject, beautifully detailed and colored.
