The Two Heroes of Kagoshima Attack a Man on Horseback, 1877

Comments - Dramatic scene from the Satsuma Rebellion of two Imperial Army soldiers attacking a rebel on horseback at Kagoshima. The soldiers gallop forward at left, one wielding a sword and the other aiming a gun as the samurai raises his blade high in the air. His horse bucks, kicking its back legs up as it nearly collides with the soldier's mount. At left, a soldier lies wounded on the ground, with blood pouring over his shoulder. Another rebel at right swings his sword above his head as clouds of smoke billow across the battlefield, obscuring the combatants. A dynamic image, very realistically drawn with fine shading in the clouds and sky.
