Soga Goro Attacking Suketsune

Comments - Fantastic triptych illustrating the famous tale of the Soga Brother. This dramatic scene shows Soga Goro attacking their father's murderer, Suketsune, at the Shogun Yoritomo's hunting camp at the foot of Mt. Fuji. The cowardly Suketsune hides under his white kimono as the young warrior flexes his right knee, muscles tensed and ready to spring into action, drawing his sword back deliberately for the final blow. The cabin is bare, except for a cloth tent wall emblazoned with the paulownia mon or crest of the Minamoto Clan lying on the wooden floor at right. The tent cloth and white kimono are delicately embossed. At far left the driving rain can be seen against the pitch black sky through the open doorway. Incredible detail in the architectural setting, with burnishing on the lacquer framework of the walls and soft shading. A great scene from this legendary story of honor and revenge, with a wonderful atmospheric setting. A terrific choice for a samurai collector or anyone interested in classic Japanese tales.
