Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road (Gyosho Tokaido), 1841 - 1844

Kakegawa: Junction with the Akiba Road - After the incredible success of Hiroshige’s original Hoeido Tokaido in the 1830s, the artist designed several other series illustrating life along the Tokaido road. The Gyosho Tokaido was published around 1841 - 1844. Here, travelers make their way past a torii gate at the junction with Akiba Road at Kakegawa. A farmer and a small child carrying a basket of firewood climb up the hill at center, as two bearers walk by carrying a large trunk suspended from a pole. Stone lanterns and tall pine trees frame the gate, with fields spreading out into the distance. A handsome composition, attractively colored with soft shading in the sky.

Artist - Hiroshige (1797 - 1858)

Image Size - 7 5/8" x 12 1/4" + margins as shown
