Original Hiroshige II (1826 - 1869) Japanese Woodblock Print
French Woman, Her Child and Pet Dog, 1860

Comments - Terrific Yokohama-e portrait of a French woman posing with her young son riding a dog. She wears a strange red jacket edged with what appears to be feathers over a full pleated skirt with a floral border print. Her ornate headdress features layers of blue ruffles with a veil hanging beneath her chin. Even here umbrella is ornately patterned and trimmed with a pink ruffle. The little boy sits on the large black dog, holding onto its ears as he looks up with a smile. He wears a furry button-front jacket over yellow pants, and a round brown cap. A blossoming cherry tree frames the blue sky overhead, with pink petals drifting down over the figures. A wonderful, imaginative image with attractive color and detail. A fine depiction of foreigners in Yokohama, also in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
