Visiting a Courtesan, 1861

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the tale of the Soga Brothers of a man and his servant arriving at the garden gate to pay a visit to the beautiful courtesan Oiso no Tora in her private quarters. She is already entertaining a guest, her young lover Soga Juro Sukenari, who wears a black kimono patterned with birds in flight. He frowns unhappily as he looks up at her, resting a slender pipe against his knee. She smiles back over her shoulder as she wipes a comb with a tissue, her flowing robe falling onto the floor around her. A black lacquer makeup chest with a mirror sits on the floor behind the pair, and shelves at right hold scrolls, a stack of books, and a fine lacquer box. The visitor outside carries a present, sneering back over his shoulder at the servant who carries a large trunk over his shoulder. Bando Hikosaburo appears as Soga Juro Sukenari and Iwai Kumesaburo plays Oiso no Tora. A great design with wonderful detail in the interior setting and furnishings.
