Kenrei-mon-in Leaping into the Sea - Dramatic portrait of Kenrei-mon-in leaping into the sea after the Taira's defeat by the Minamoto during the naval Battle of Dan-no-ura. Kenrei-mon-in was the mother of the child Emperor Antoko, and they were attempting to flee with the Taira fleet when it was cornered and forced into battle a Dan-no-ura. Kenrei-mon-in, her son, his grandmother, and many Taira warriors jumped into the sea to commit suicide rather than be captured, but she was rescued and spent her final days as a nun. She is shown here clutching her infant son to her chest as she plunges into the undulating waves, her robe and hair fluttering in the wind. A bold design with beautiful detail. A handsome portrait of this brave beauty.
