Pilgrims at a Waterfall, 1876

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene of six commoners making a religious pilgrimage to a waterfall. The fellow in the center carries a large black lacquer signpost or marker covered with writing over his shoulders, his hair tied back with a twisted cloth. The man behind him stretches a towel between his hands, while at lower left, another man rings a bell. The fellow at far right ties a striped sash around his waist, grinning happily, while his companion grimaces up at him, holding a large knife in his hand. Five of the men wear boldly patterned blue and white cotton kimono. A striking design with expressive figures and lively color. Includes burnishing in the black signpost.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14" x 28 1/4"

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Three panels, not attached at the seams. Several small wormholes and holes, mostly near edges, repaired, blends well. Slight soiling, very slight rubbing. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
